This segment will offer useful strategic insight on the impact of technological disruption both from the perspective of the incumbent as well as the challenger. Many industries today irrespective of size are subject to the forces of technological disruption. For example, Kodak, one of the world’s most successful companies that practically invented film-based photography was eliminated from the marketplace with the rise of the digital camera. Were Kodak executives asleep at the wheel? Was management incompetent in dealing with the digital threat? To answer this, not exactly. We shall examine the history of disruption within industries and distill certain lessons of companies when confronted with disruptive change cannot or will not make the adjustments necessary to adapt to new circumstances and changing technological environment. Two perspectives will be offered; first, how to defend when confronted with disruption if you are an incumbent and two, how to successfully surmount a well-established incumbent if you are a new challenger. This lecture will offer surprising lessons to business owners and entrepreneurs alike.
